This module is for you if you are a registered health professional who has completed your preceptorship and wishes to develop your knowledge, skills and competence to become an effective mentor.

Developed to meet the needs of busy health care professionals, this exciting and innovative module uses classroom and practice based learning to prepare students for their role as mentors. A range of student-centred activities enable students to develop their knowledge and skills with the support of the online Keele Learning Environment (KLE).

For the 12-week duration of the module, you will benefit from the support of a dedicated tutor and will complete a number of learning activities, both as an individual and collaboratively with fellow mentorship students. Your mentorship of a pre-registration student (or students) will be assessed in your work place by a nominated supervisor*, and your class-based and practice-based activities will feed into the development of a portfolio of evidence. In addition, you will be asked to write an essay in which you reflect on your development as a mentor.

This stimulating module will prepare successful students to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's mentor standards to support learning and assessment in practice.

This module is available as an elective module within BSc Clinical Practice (multiple pathways) and as a stand alone module.

* To undertake this module, you must have a student or students allocated to your work place that you can ‘mentor’ AND a work-based supervisor (themselves an accredited mentor(or equivalent) who is live on the local Mentors’ Register) who will assess your achievement of work-based learning outcomes.

The aim of the module is to prepare practitioners for the role of work based mentor.

By successfully completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Analyse how the knowledge, skills and attitudes gained during the module have prepared you for facilitating teaching and learning in practice;
  • Critically reflect on the importance of the mentor-student relationship, including the influence of role modelling;
  • Demonstrate effective achievement of the NMC competencies for mentorship.

During the 12-week module, you will work towards achieving the above learning outcomes by completing individual and collaborative learning activities and by mentoring a student in your usual work place under the guidance of your supervisor. Feedback on your learning will be given by your work-based supervisor and your module leader. You will gather evidence of your learning and development as a mentor by compiling an individual formative portfolio that will form the basis for an assessment of your work-based practice as a mentor (by your supervisor).

This module will require you to attend the University on a fortnightly basis for a full day taught session for the 12 weeks of the course.  You will also be required to access and engage with the Keele Learning Environment which is the electronic learning platform.


Registration with relevant professional regulatory body (e.g. NMC, HCPC)

Evidence of Level 5 (Diploma) academic study or higher

For nursing and midwifery applicants a minimum of 12 months post-qualifying experience

Coordinated access to a pre-registration learner in your work place

Why choose this course?

This course will prepare you as a qualified practitioner to undertake the role of a mentor in the practice setting. The course is designed to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008) 'Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice' and will explore key elements of mentorship focussing on facilitating, supporting and assessing learners in practice.

It also provides a foundation for those of you who may wish to progress to an NMC approved practice teacher programme. 

The course consists of 6 protected study days, three face-to-face contact days and three online learning days (36 hours in total). In addition to this you will undertake 164 hours of independent study. Normally these hours are completed within 12 weeks.

The University has recently created a new virtual learning environment to support your online learning, using interactive tools such as videos, voice overs etc. We hope you will find this stimulating and helpful.

The course will be delivered using a range of exciting and interactive approaches to learning that require you to be an active learner eg: enquiry based learning, group discussions, role play, debate, and online activities via Blackboard (the University's virtual learning environment) including the use of a virtual student.

The course is designed to develop your reflective and analytical skills, to enable you to apply learning theory and professional policy, to practice. These will assist in developing your skills and competence to become a credible and effective mentor in practice. 

The aim of this course is to:

  • equip healthcare professionals with an appropriate level of knowledge and understanding in order to facilitate learning and assess competency and proficiency of pre-registration healthcare professionals
  • this includes professional responsibility and accountability when making judgements of assessment in achievement of competency in clinical practice.

The outcomes are:

  • evidence an in-depth knowledge, understanding and application of the eight domains identified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council 'Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (NMC 2008) for a stage 2 mentor'
  • critically evaluate teaching, learning and assessment approaches in the practice setting
  • critically appraise your mentoring skills and evaluate the learning environment in the practice setting
  • critically debate the complexities of the role of the mentor, including the associated professional accountability issues in relation to the practice area.

Entry requirements

Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level). Applicants must be registered as a health care professional for one year prior to starting this course.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment for this module comprises of two elements:

  • workbook demonstrating achievement of the NMC (2008) Standard for Mentors (Stage 2). This element is classed as achieved/not achieved.
  • Reflective Essay - this essay is a critical analysis of your mentorship of the virtual student. This element carries the level 6 academic credit.
