THEY may not have halos but there's no doubt the Coast's Adventure Angels will be helping people see the light.
On May 26, Liz Ward and seven other trekkers will be hiking Victoria's Mornington Peninsula to raise money and awareness for the Fred Hollows Foundat- ion, a charity which works to restore and improve sight in the world's most disadvantaged communities.
The Forest Glen mother said she and her friends are aiming to raise more than $4000 for the foundation through the Wild Women on Top 30km Melbourne Coastrek.
"Just $25 or $50 can restore someone's sight in a third-world country and that money can train people to perform operations on others in their home areas,” she said.
"It's still such a relevant cause in today's world.
"To do something we enjoy for the cause too, that just gives (the hike) such an enormous value.”
The eight hikers, who comprise two four-person teams called the Adventure Angels I and II, have been training hard for the event but Ms Ward is concerned bad weather may hinder their progress.
"You can train, train, train but if it's pouring rain and your feet are wet, that can lead to a lot of blistering,” she said.
"We're expecting it to be cold and it could also be really windy.”
If this was the reality for them on Friday, Ms Ward said they would be counting on the strong camaraderie between the women to keep them moving.
"If you were doing it on your own, you'd probably struggle but when everyone's distracted and meeting new people along the way, you've walked 30km and had a great time before you know it,” she said.
"It's been a really good thing for our friends, even just getting involved in our training sessions.
"The Coastrek is a fantastic opportunity to get women outdoors, not just for exercise but the social benefits and to reconnect with nature.”
Adventure Angels Dianne Olson, Meghan Appleby, Kim Cameron, Tina Olson, Susan Hirst, Sandra Reardon, Wendy Barnes and Liz Ward travel to Victoria on May 25 to prepare for the following day's trek.
They will walk from Caloundra to Noosa in July for the same cause.
